General Information

* July & August from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Tax payments may be made in person or by mail:

  • United States Post Office postmark accepted.
  • Charge card payments are not accepted.
  • Neither the Receiver of Taxes nor any other official has legal authority to waive the statutory penalty charges fixed by the Real Property Tax Law.
  • Partial payment of property and/or school taxes cannot be accepted.

Drop box available on Vinewood Avenue by the Employees' Entrance for payments.

If you have an escrow account, please forward your property or school tax bill to your mortgage holder as soon as possible to avoid penalty.

Senior citizens and disabled homeowners may designate a third party to receive duplicate copies of their taxes. For information contact the Tax Office.

You may be eligible for exemptions on your tax bills; contact our Assessor's Office for information.

If you have received a tax bill and no longer own the property, you can either return the bill to the Tax Office or forward it to the new owner.

Property Taxes

Collection Period: January 1st through April 30th

Interest and Penalties:

  • January - no penalty
  • February - 1.25%
  • March - 2.50% - after March 15th add $2.00 for second notice charge mandated by New York State Law
  • April - 3.75% plus $2.00 for second notice charge
    (Collection for April is contingent upon receiving permission from Schenectady County Finance Department to continue to collect through April 30th)

Collection ends April 30th and all unpaid taxes are turned over to the Schenectady County Department of Finance, 620 State Street, Schenectady, New York 12305.

Fiscal Year January 1st through December 31st.

Water Collection

Collection period: June 1st through June 30th
Fiscal year: January 1st through December 31st

Interest and Penalties:

  • July 1st through July 31st - $1.00 penalty
  • Collection ends July 31st . All unpaid water rent bills will be added to the next property bill issued with additional penalty.

Mohonasen and Schalmont School Tax Collection

Collection period: September 1st through October 31st.
Fiscal period covered is July 1st through June 30th.

School tax rates are set by your School Board; any questions regarding the rates should be directed to them.

Interest and Penalties:

  • September - no penalty
  • October - 2%

Collection ends October 31st.

Payments may be made at Schenectady County Finance Department (518) 388-4262 for a limited time; then the bill will be placed on the next property tax bill to be issued the following January.
